What are the essentials of life?

Today I’d like to share with you a notification that I received on my iphone through my app Positive Thinking: The Key to Happiness. It stated this:

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so let us all be thankful – Buddha.

It really got me thinking of how I take forgranted so many things in life.

Every day, I wake up each morning, I eat three meals, I meet friends and family, I work and study, and I go to sleep. And all of these things are things I didn’t find myself saying, ‘thank god I had these things’.

But after reading this quote, I thought to myself:

  • what about people who don’t wake up the next morning? And for their families that are left with the loss of their loved one?
  • What about those who are starving in the world and go without food for what seems like eternity?
  • What about those who don’t have friends and family and who feel completely alone?
  • What about those who can’t find employment and struggle to meet the rising costs of daily life?
  • What about those who have not had the opportunity to study and to learn things they have so wanted to learn?
  • What about those who cannot sleep and night and who struggle to keep on going the next day?

And I think to myself, how thankful I should be for waking up each morning, eating food, enjoying the company of friends and family and being able to learn and work.

Take a moment to think about these little things that we consider ‘daily routine’ but in fact are life’s greatest blessings.

Please join me in sparing a thought for all of those who do not have these blessings. I hope that our thoughts will keep you strong and give you the will to keep on going on.

Thank you for reading my post.
